Figures show increase in use of plastic
Figures from the Christmas period show an increase in the use of plastic - both credit cards and eftpos.
Electronic transaction provider Paymark says Otago residents clocked up $4.6 million eftpos transactions in December.
That was up from $4.4 million in the same month in 2011.
And Statistics New Zealand says Christmas shoppers spent more with their credit and debit cards in December, compared with the previous month.
A 0.3% percent increase in the value of electronic card spending was the third consecutive monthly increase.
The total spend through electronic cards in New Zealand for the month was $6.8 billion.
