Major shift in media ownership in the south
A major shift in media ownership in the south is under way, with APN News & Media set to sell its South Island newspaper interests.
APN owns The New Zealand Herald.
In the South Island the company publishes the twice-weekly Christchurch paper The Star, the daily Oamaru Mail, and a number of small, community titles.
The company described the move, in a memo to staff, as a strategic decision to consolidate its publishing business in the North Island.
The Star has a circulation of more than 70,000 while the Oamaru Mail has about 3000.
