New Zealand dollar gains

The New Zealand dollar gained amid growing optimism US President Barack Obama will reach a deal with the House of Representatives.

It's hoped he'll avert automatic spending cuts and tax hikes, that could push the world's biggest economy back into recession.

The kiwi rose to US81.84c from US81.34c yesterday.
