Otago coast the most popular home for red-billed seagull
The Otago coast appears to have become the most popular home of choice for the red-billed seagull.
The gull was designated a nationally vulnerable species in 2008, after a substantial population decline at large breeding colonies.
But a University of Otago study has found the population has increased substantially along the Otago coast.
The study found conservation efforts to protect albatrosses could be helping.
The instigation of rat control at Taiaroa Head was followed by a rapid increase in red-billed gull nest numbers.
