Policeman allegedly punched in the head

A young Dunedin man faces charges after allegedly punching a male police officer eight to ten times in the head.

Senior Sergeant Paul McLaughlan says the officer was attempting to arrest the teenager for breaching the DCC liquor ban, when the 17 year old began throwing punches.

The incident occurred at about 1 am on Sunday.

McLaughlan says another attending officer witnessed the alleged assault, and the man was arrested after making a brief attempt to run away from the scene.

The officer's injuries are thought to have been minor.
