Groundswell of support for retaining local neurosurgery facilities

The response of the people of Otago and Southland to the proposal to have neurosurgery for the area relocated to Christchurch has swelled to an angry roar over the past two weeks.
Local politicians, residents, the University and medics alike are adamant that neurosurgery needs to stay here, and Mayor Peter Chin has added his voice to that of many. ›see story
Recycling and rubbish collection changes announced today

What is being dubbed as the biggest shake-up to kerbside recycling and rubbish collection since amalgamation was announced by the Dunedin City Council today.
The major points of the announcement were to do with the introduction of wheelie bins for recycling, and the separation of glass from other recyclables which is hoped to result in an economically viable product. ›see story

A Dunedin bakery has come away with a bronze medal at the New Zealand Pie Awards, and although it got the tick from the judges, it's not the pie of choice here in Dunedin.
Marlow Pie's Mince and Cheese was the only South Island pie to make it on to the dais, and as a side note, was one of the few winning pies not to be created by a baker of Asian descent. ›see story

Official Cash Rate rises to 3%

The Reserve Bank today raised the Official Cash Rate to 3%as expected, but also indicated it's likely to take a pause in its rate hike cycle.
Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard signalled that interest rates were likely to increase more slowly than the bank predicted six weeks ago. ›read more

Dunedin has been commended for its efforts to support Fair Trade, with many businesses and the City Council committed to only buying coffee which fits the bill.

The study found that on non-schooldays, which account for about half of the year, children's average daily cholesterol intake is higher, their dietary fibre

Art Auction to raise money for Nepal

A local music tutor and teacher aide is holding an art auction to raise money for a small village in Nepal which is in desperate need.
