Dunedin police have a lead in relation to a spate of truck battery thefts over the last couple of weeks.

One stolen battery was recovered at a scrap metal yard in Green Island on Wednesday night.

That's after two truck batteries were reported stolen from the Green Island area on Monday.

And it follows the alleged theft of two batteries from an Orari Street truck yard in South Dunedin last week.

New batteries cost about $800 to replace.

Police say batteries are often stolen for their metal content.

They typically fetch about $50 each when taken to scrap metal yards.
