Dunedin police are concerned there's a young man actively trying to break into central city properties at night.

Officers are warning residents in the CBD to be alert, following several attempted burglaries.

Late last night a caucasian man in his late twenties, described as ''dirty looking'' was reportedly seen trying to enter a York Place address.

At this stage, police cannot confirm what his intentions were.

The incident is similar to a recent case in Queen Street, where a man was spotted trying to enter a house through a window.

Police recommend residents keep their properties secure at night and remain vigilant.
