More than a dozen burglaries throughout the weekend are being investigated by Dunedin police.

Thieves have been most active in the suburbs of St Kilda and Fairfield.

Houses are being targeted, with windows smashed and outdoor equipment like solar lights being stolen from backyards.

In some cases thieves have entered homes through unlocked doors and open windows.

Police don't know whether the recent burglaries are connected, but they're not ruling it out.

They're also investigating the burglary of the Captain Cook Tavern in the central city.

It's in the final stages of a major renovation, and was broken into overnight on Saturday and trashed.

Police urge residents to use common sense, secure their property and report suspicious activity.
