Asbestos fibres found at Forrester Park are likely to be buried, as the Dunedin City Council consults experts on the matter.

Part of the BMX track at the park is cordoned off in the meantime.

Material containing asbestos was discovered in the soil by volunteers working to extend the track.

Council staff say the volunteers don't need medical checks, as there's only a low risk of the material being dangerous.

Samples of the contaminated soil are being analysed, and so far just one contains asbestos levels above national guidelines.

Council staff and consultants plan to re-bury contaminated material and soil.

It's believed the material containing asbestos fibres is from an old landfill site.
