Business is down at many Dunedin pubs and bars, due to changes in drinking behaviour.

That's the message from local representatives of the national hospitality association.

They say the recent closure of several Dunedin bars is likely a result of cheap supermarket alcohol and the reduced drink-driving limit.

It's believed many drinkers, especially students, buy the cheapest alcohol available, and bars can't compete with supermarket prices.

And, the hospitality association says fewer people are stopping at pubs for a drink after work, afraid they'll be over the new drink-driving limit.
