Police praise scrap metal dealers

Police are praising the work of scrap metal dealers, after a spike in the number of arrests sparked a welcome cut in metal thefts.

Dunedin police say there have been 10 arrests in the last three months, after an email notification system was created.

Scrap metal merchants were provided with a list of about 40names of offenders.

In turn, they were contacting police with information.

Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan says they are also sharing information among themselves.

The result is a 20% decline in reported thefts.
