Unions come out against KiwiRail plans

Unions have come out against KiwiRail plans to cut between 170 and 220 jobs.

Railway and Maritime Trade Union General Secretary Wayne Butson says workers are overwhelmingly against the proposals.

He says they fear the cuts may herald another major departure of key rail skills to Australia, where the rejuvenation of rail transport is a Government priority.

Staff meetings, including one in Otago, are set for this Friday.
