Infringement notices issued for unsafe vehicles

A van and trailer carrying five tonnes of gear was stopped by police, after officers saw the vehicle's front wheels glowing red with heat from overworked brakes.

The van's driver was caught during a Dunedin police operation targeting unsafe and illegally modified vehicles.

About 80 vehicles were stopped, 18 were referred to inspectors for further checks, and 14 of those were ordered off the road.

Police say some cars stopped had tyres so bald they had wire showing through, something particularly dangerous on wet and icy roads.

Twenty-six infringement notices were issued to drivers, and police say they intend to continue targeting unsafe vehicles on Dunedin roads.
