Water quality improvement hearings begin

A hearing charged with improving water quality in Otago began today.

The Otago Regional Council sat to hear submissions on the Water Quality Plan Change.

The proposed change seeks to improve water quality to Otago's rivers, lakes and streams.

It also includes rules to control pollution entering rural waterways.

The plan attracted more than 400 submissions, and an ORC panel will hear them in Alexandra, Balclutha, Oamaru and Wanaka.

The hearings will spend time at those locations in the next six weeks.
