Police praising butane retailers

New Zealand Police are praising retailers who have announced they are restricting sales of butane-based products to minors.

More than sixty hardware stores are now seeking I.D to determine proof of age, where they believe products aren't being purchased for their intended purpose.

Chief Coroner, Judge Neil MacLean, has released figures showing 63 people have died as a result of butane inhalation incidents since 2000.

24 of those deaths were people under the age of 17.

Two young men were badly burned in Mosgiel earlier this year, following a huffing incident.
