Severe gales expected
Parts of both the North and South Islands are bracing for wild weather, with severe gales expected over the next 24 hours.
The temperature hit a balmy 19.9 degrees celcius in Dunedin this afternoon.
But a front is expected to move on to the lower South Island this evening.
Ahead of the front, northwest winds are forecast to reach gale force over many eastern areas of the South Island.
Metservice says Otago could see wind gusts of up to 130km an hour.
The winds are expected to ease early tomorrow as the front moves north.
