A University of Otago researcher has called for a law restricting smoking in cars.

Associate Professor Nick Wilson has made the call after publishing research showing New Zealanders smoke in cars three times more than their Sydney counterparts.

Of nearly 5000 vehicles observed in Sydney, only 1% had smokers, compared to almost 3% in New Zealand.

Under New South Wales law, cars must be smoke free when a child under 16 is a passenger.

Associate Professor Wilson says smoking in cars creates high levels of pollution.

He says the research provides further evidence for a similar law in New Zealand.
