New University of Otago research on keas was released last week, and should make an important contribution to the New Zealand alpine parrot's conservation.

Researchers looked at genetic variation in kea populations.

It found because of kea's genetic structure, it is possible to move birds between populations to reverse their ongoing decline.

Dr Nicolas Dussex undertook the research for his PhD at the Department of Zoology.
