Dunedin police are crediting ''good old fashioned police work'' for the quick capture of a man alleged to have held up a Highcliff Road dairy yesterday afternoon.

At around 2pm a man armed with a knife entered the Shiel Hill Food Centre and demanded money and cigarettes from a woman behind the counter.

A quantity of cigarettes was taken during the robbery.

The woman, who was on her own, was shaken but unharmed.

Officers found the alleged offender in a nearby house not long after the incident, and charged the 21 year old with aggravated robbery.

The Dunedin man was held in police custody and appeared in the Dunedin District Court earlier today.
