Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull has labelled claims the Dunedin City Council did not communicate with the developers of the $100 waterfront hotel as "completely untrue".

The city was left dealing with the fallout today, following the sudden and unexpected dumping of plans for the controversial building.

But city and business identities say Betterways' loss may be another developer's gain.
