The Easter road toll has ended with four deaths despite Police targeting speed and alcohol over the long weekend.

The weekend got off to a bad start, with three deaths within the first 12 hours of the holiday period.

Another death was recorded yesterday morning following a crash in Waitemata.

There were no reported fatalities in the Otago region.
