Visitor arrivals to New Zealand in March were down 6% compared with the same month last year.

But the drop of more than 253,000 has been explained by the later timing of Easter, and later school holidays in key countries.

Statistics New Zealand says school holidays in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and some Australian states coincide with Easter.

As that was later this year, there were fewer visitors from those countries.
