The number of visitor arrivals to New Zealand for July was the highest ever recorded for that month.

Figures released by Statistics New Zealand reveal the milestone, with more than 196,000 people visiting the country throughout last month.

Population statistics project manager Susan Hollows says an increase in holiday visitors from Indonesia, Australia and China is responsible for the boost in numbers.

The previous July record of about 183,000 was set last year.
