A controversial plan to subdivide the Wingatui Racecourse site is being considered by the Dunedin City Council's hearings committee this week.

The Otago Racing Club wants to move the existing racecourse, and divide adjacent land into 11 residential sections.

Its application to do so has attracted 14 opposing submissions.

The proposed subdivision breaches district plan regulations, in that it would see residential development within a rural zone.

The hearings committee will meet on Friday to consider the application, and is likely to release its decision in the next couple of weeks.
