Last month saw a slight increase in retail spending, with electronic card transactions up 0.5%.
There were 119 million transactions, worth $6b.
The hospitality and consumables industries were the main drivers of August's retail increase.
Hospitality was up $9.8m - 1.3%.
And consumables was up by almost the same amount, while fuel was down 0.4% or $2.7m.
