The total energy use of the services sector accounts for less than 20% of the total business use.
That's despite the fact the services sector contributes 44% of New Zealand's Gross Domestic Product.
And it covers 55% of people employed.
Last year the sector used more than 75,000 terajoules of energy.
That's an increase of less than 3% since 2010.
The sector comprises labour intensive businesses such as cafes.
Statistics New Zealand says one third of businesses in the sector are installing energy-saving technologies.
