Situation

A very cold southwesterly airflow is spreading over New Zealand today as depressions move across the South Island. The airflow will tend southerly tomorrow and Sunday as an anticyclone extends a ridge of high pressure into the Southern Ocean, This anticyclone will spread over New Zealand on Tuesday next week, while a depression deepens in the Tasman Sea. This depression will move across the country later next week bringing more unsettled weather.

Dunedin

Cloudy and very cold tonight and tomorrow with periods of wintry showers. Sleet and snow likely to low levels. Gusty southwesterly winds may be strong at times. Showers easing on Sunday and clearing later in the day with very cold southerly winds decreasing.

North Otago

Cloudy and very cold tonight and tomorrow with periods of wintry showers. Sleet and snow likely to low levels. Gusty southwesterly winds may be strong at times. Showers easing on Sunday and clearing later in the day with very cold southerly winds decreasing.

Central Otago

Snow showers tonight and at first tomorrow slowly clearing during the day with fresh gusty very cold southwesterlies. Becoming fine and sunny on Sunday but still cold with southerly winds; heavy frosts Sunday night.

South Otago/Southland

Cloudy and very cold tonight and tomorrow with periods of wintry showers. Sleet and snow likely to low levels. Gusty southwesterly winds may be strong at times. Showers easing on Sunday and clearing later in the day with very cold southerly winds decreasing.
