A native parrot absent in the wild in Dunedin for more than a century was back swooping over the city today.

A Kaka left the Orokonui Ecosanctuary and made for the Botanic Garden, raising hopes members of the endangered species may become regular callers.

But the historic visit has also raised fears about the safety of the birds if they repopulate.
