A Logan Park High School pupil is enjoying national recognition, after winning the New Zealand Spelling Bee competition.

The year nine pupil became the national spelling champion on Saturday, and is one of the youngest winners in the contest's ten-year history.

Champion George Sabonadiere correctly spelt the word eugenics to claim the title.

The 13 year old says he regularly studies the dictionary and is quizzed by family members.

The Wellington competition involved a dozen rounds of spelling, against 15 finalists from around the country.

A John McGlashan College pupil came third in the contest.
